Innovation
Creativity thinks of new things, but innovation does new things. Whether it's teaching classes in new media, teleconferencing, or working with media interactivity, I'm always seeking and promoting new applications for the innovative and practical use of new technologies.
Rather than taking the stance that one should either be using technology for the sake of using new technology or resisting change with the attitude of wait and see, I look for pairings of need and potential to formulate a successful application of technology in the classroom, boardroom, stage, street or other. I have often been an early adapter of web, videoconferencing, and other communications tools and am eager to assist in facilitating change or at least exploring tools (be they computer or organizational) which promote efficiency or new positive outcomes.
Sample Efforts:
- I was a member of the GCAST task committee to create digital pedagogical tools, funded by the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Maryland.
- I brought together disparate resources from across the campus to create a new type of performance space, which had never existed before at the university (an interactive performance space).
- I staged a performance as a test of broadcasting from outdoor environments using Personal Interfaces to the Grid in the Access Grid.
- Active participant in the online community ArtGrid for four years.
- I brought teleconferencing to my university department.
- I was the first to use video in performance, videoconferencing in performance, and as a meeting and collaboration tool.
- I was one of the first to use Max/Jitter in an Access Grid performance.
- I taught English Literature using multimedia tools.
- I have utilized blogs as organizational tools and as a meeting format for projects.
- I was the first student in my department to have the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities fellowship and the Winnemore fellowship, both requiring digital outcomes to research.
- I was the first student in my department to use a computer language as a language requirement.
- I have been a proponent of UMAGI (using videoconferencing across the university campus).
- I used Google Earth to create dynamic backgrounds for a theatrical performance.
- I was the technology coordinator for IFTR at the University of Maryland.
- I was the first to propose and create a website for a local nonprofit arts organization.
- I have also taken many workshops and classes in emerging performance technologies, and have interviewed some of the preeminent practitioners of digital performance technology.
